Individual Note: 1930 US Federal Census shows Elma Barnett living with Alba E. Barnett in Lamb County, Texas, along with Alba's grandson Roche L., age 5 months.
Elma Murl "Susie" Barnett Hooks, 95, of Amarillo died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church Chapel with Monsignor Joseph Tash officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Mrs. Hooks was born Aug. 27, 1909, in Comanche County to James and Alba Earl Hill Barnett. She was the fifth child born to a family of 10. She came to Amarillo in 1942 to work at Pantex until World War II ended and Pantex closed. She then worked at the Amarillo Air Force Base until it closed.
She lived more than 40 years in the Eastridge addition of Amarillo. She was a member of Eastridge Baptist Church. She was a previous member of Sanborn Baptist Church and Glenwood Baptist Church. Susie loved her family and friends, never passing an opportunity to do a kind deed for others. She was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rubert Hooks; a son, Roche Hooks; and a grandson, David Hooks.
Survivors include two daughters, Flora Cox of Burkburnett and Neva Burks and husband, Robert, of Amarillo; a sister, Larue Ramsey of Las Cruces, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0001 or to a favorite charity.

Individual Note: In Georgia Death records 1919-98, there is a James V. Hooks d. 1964 in Lauren County, GA. He was 40 yrs of age at his death. This is probably not the same James V. Hooks because our James V. Hooks was born in 1867 and he would have been almost 100 yrs old in 1964 if this had been the same person. Grandmother Hooks (Elma Hooks m. Rubert Hooks -- Rubert Hooks is James V. Hooks' son), said that Mr. Hooks (referring to Rubert's dad, James) was living near Ft. Worth, TX when he died. She said he died about 1943.
1900 US Fed Census, Cooke County, TX shows James V. Hooks, b. Aug 1870 age 29, wife Elizabeth L., b. Feb 1887, age 23. Shows 2 children (both daughters), May S. b. Apr 1897 age 3, and Elsie C. b. Dec 1899, age 6 mos. Shows this listing just next to Lorenzo Tipton and Margarett Tipton, James' mother (Amanda) and her last husband.
There is a Jim Hooks in the U.S. Federal Census for 1910. He was 39 yrs of age, approx. birthdate 1870.
There is a James V. Hooks in Lamar County, Texas (U.S. Federal Census for 1920). He was 44 yrs of age. Wife's name is not legible but looks like "Tucia" or "Lucia" or "Teresa" or possibly "Irena". (Grandmother Hooks said her name was Elizabeth Strickland before they were married). She was 41 yrs of age. (There is also a marriage record for J. V. Hooks and Elizabeth Strickland in Texas on Aug 19, 1894 in Denton County, TX. Grandmother Hooks said that Rubert was born in Pilot Pt, TX which is also in Denton County, TX, so this is more than likely their marriage record.)
