Note for: Moses Addington, 10 FEB 1797 - 11 OCT 1858 Index
Individual Note: Moses' parents had established their home in Buncombe County, NC when he was about nine years old. In the early 1820s, Moses and Lydia moved west to Macon County, NC. Moses bought several parcels of land during the next few years and
eventually owned 900 acres. He farmed and worked the timber.
Moses was driving a four horse team when he was thrown from the wagon, breaking both legs. He died a few days later. His property was sold at auction and divided among the children, Lydia receiving dower rights on the home place.

Note for: John Addington, 5 OCT 1745 - 1 MAR 1819 Index
Individual Note: John ADDINGTON first married a Quaker, Mary LAMB. John became a Quaker, taking his oath on 27 March 1775. After Mary's death, John married Elizabeth HEATON. He remained true to the Quaker way of life.
In 1801, John's brother James died and named John as guardian of his children.
Slavery had become quite popular among the landowners in South Carolina. The ADDINGTON families did not embrace slavery and it became quite difficult to compete in the farming industry with others who were slaveowners. In the fall of 1806,
nearly all the Quakers began a western migration for the free states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. John took his family, some of James' children, and his widowed mother to Ohio and later to Indiana. There were five ADDINGTON and two ROBERTS
families that formed the colony called "Addington,' now named Chester, Indiana.
Records of Bucks County, PA, 1693-1780
July 14, 1698: In more than two pages of testimony in a case of a stolen nag and colt, John ADDINGTON attested Saith that William Biles challenged a horse at Grace Langhorns that was then unearmarked. (After his testimony, John Addington was
struck one blow by the plaintiff.) ®5 , pg. 3

Note for: James Addington, ABT 1753 - ABT 1799 Index
Individual Note: James ADDINGTON fought under Col. Brandon and Gen. Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) in the Revolutionary War. Some family stories reveal that James was in the British Army and managed to be discharged. He then joined the Volunteers from South
Carolina and fought for freedom from British Rule.
His will, signed on 28 July 1798 and probated 3 February 1801, listed nine children. Ten children were listed with Rebekah in the 1880 census record, the tenth child being a girl under 10. James appointed his brother, John ADDINGTON, executor
of his estate and guardian of his children. It has been assumed that John moved James' younger children, along with his family, to Ohio in 1806 and to Indiana by 1807; however, there is no record in those states of the three younger children
living there. These children, Karenhappuck, John T., and Rachel, were know to be living in South Carolina as young adults. Rebekah was named in James' will and was present at the probate, but evidently did not move to Ohio. ®5, pg. 106

Note for: Henry Jr. Addington, ABT 1755 - 1807 Index
Individual Note: Henry, Jr. remains one of the mysteries of the ADDINGTON family. There have been rumors that he favored the British during the Revolutionary War. Documents have not been found to support this claim. There has been some speculation that he
went to Lincoln County, TN. But, again, no records have been found to verify that he lived there. An unidentified woman named Elizabeth ADDINGTON may have been Henry's wife.

Note for: Elizabeth Addington, 1 MAR 1764 - Index
Individual Note: Elizabeth was single in 1787 at the time her father's will was probated.
Bastardy charges were filed against her in 1785-1791 Court in Union County, SC. Records state in part:

and acknowledged themselves Jointly and Severally to be Indebted to the Justices of the County Court of Union in the said Sum of Forty Pounds Proclamation money."
Elizabeth's son, Benjamin, was bound to Moses WALDON in 1790 at age fiv
It has not been proved that Vardy ADDINGTON and Jason ADDINGTON are also Elizabeth's sons. Elizabeth, Benjamin, and Vardy lived in adjacent residences according to the 1910 Census. Jason and Benjamin's son, Jesse, were living in Jefferson
County, AL, at the same time and married sisters.
